Head of Process Engineering

The Head of Process Engineering (HPE), is the resident technical SME on all matters related to process equipment design, purchasing, installation, operation, reliability, quality, safety, and regulatory compliance. What are we looking for?

The Head of Process Engineering (HPE), is the resident technical SME on all matters related to process equipment design, purchasing, installation, operation, reliability, quality, safety, and regulatory compliance. The HPE provides technical leadership across all operating departments and is a process-driven individual who can establish proven methods to assure consistency and repeatability of manufacturing processes.

What would you be doing?

  • Devising a strategic vision for DECIEM to progressively increase production throughput by actioning equipment efficiency gains opportunities, drive down manufacturing costs, and grow inhouse manufacturing capacity.
  • Introducing technical innovation and agility to DECIEM’s manufacturing processes where applicable.
  • Developing engineering solutions to support maintenance, quality, and safety initiatives.
  • Assessing processes, collecting data, and interpreting KPIs for implementation of lean initiatives. Using LEAN methodologies, implement continuous improvement strategies including failure and root cause analyses for manufacturing processes, equipment, systems, and instrumentation.
  • Optimizing facility layout as dictated by space constraints, new equipment installations, and/or production expansion initiatives, in keeping with process functionality and flow.
  • Seamless planning and execution of the relocation of existing filling, packaging lines, and other process equipment, as dictated by new plant layouts at DECIEM’s production facility (ies).
  • Responsible for drafting technical specifications, in addition to, front to back purchasing and vertical start-up of processing equipment for DECIEM’s production and compounding departments.
  • Ongoing monitoring of production and compounding efficiencies via equipment productivity tracking systems (OEE boards, or other).
  • Establishing strong working relationships with equipment manufacturers, suppliers, and integrators who excel in delivering quality and compliance with Canadian industry standards.
  • Developing and optimizing industrial processes from inception to start up while ensuring that validation/qualification standards are upheld.
  • Upgrading systems and processes of existing filling and packaging lines through supplemental automation.
  • Maintaining electronic equipment records, engineering drawings, adhering to quality standards when implementing modifications (e.g. change controls, document revision version control).
  • Developing best practices, routines, and innovative solutions to improve production rates and repeatable quality of output.
  • Performing risk assessments, managing budgets and tight deadlines, as well as providing process documentation and operating instructions as required.

What skills and qualifications do you need?

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, mechanical or chemical engineering preferred.
  • P.Eng., PMP, Six Sigma Lean Black Belt certifications are an asset.
  • 10+ years of process engineering experience preferably in the personal care, food, or pharmaceutical industries.
  • Demonstrated business acumen, specializing in project management, budget/time management, with strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, decision-making, presentation, and communication skills.
  • Exhibit strong technical writing ability to clearly and effectively communicate technical ideas and concepts.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office platform (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Project), as well as CMMS, ERP, working knowledge of AutoCAD, and any other relevant proprietary software applications with the ability to integrate new software into an existing business environment.
  • Experience with FDA/Health Canada regulated cosmetic, food, or pharmaceutical field preferred.
  • Knowledge of documentation practices associated with cGMP operations (SOPs, calibration and maintenance records, equipment tracking logs, change control procedures, etc.)
  • Knowledge of relevant safety standards and regulatory bodies governing equipment design and operation (e.g. ESA, CSA, OHSA, Z432 Safeguarding of Machinery, LOTO, TSSA).
  • Knowledge of equipment design, construction, operation, qualification, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of equipment process controls and building automation systems.
  • Knowledge of process automation equipment related to the cosmetics, personal care, or pharmaceutical industries is an asset or experience in advanced manufacturing practices in other industries such as food, CPG, or automotive will be considered.
  • Experience leading and coaching a technical team including 3rd party vendors.
  • Flexible to work any hours, outside of regular hours, including weekends or after hours, when required.
  • Ability to adapt to a fast paced and demanding environment.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned projects and collaboratively in a multi-functional team environment supporting day-to-day manufacturing schedules and operations.
