Behind The Bottle with Prudvi Kaka

Hello! I'm Prudvi Kaka, Chief Scientific Officer at DECIEM. I have been lucky enough to have worked across every single product at DECIEM over the last 7 years, and today I'd love to fill you in on a few behind the scenes stories from my time here :-)

NIOD Copper Amino Isolate Lipid is a formulation that we feel extremely proud of and is our first-ever patent-pending product. When formulating CAIL we wanted to further elevate the skin health benefits of GHK-Cu (Copper Peptide) to create a pro-collagen, pro-lipid, pro-fat formula. We discovered the peptide Tripeptide-1 (Palmitoyl) Copper, which would bring enhanced lipophilic properties (increasing Copper Peptide's affinity with the skin). As we started to formulate, it became clear that solubilization would be a challenge. When it is Palmitoyalted, the freely water-soluble Copper Tripeptide-1 now becomes suddenly very insoluble. Initially, we presented some suspension formats to Brandon, but his feedback was that he could feel the peptide and that the suspension format would give lower performance than a completely soluble formulation. NIOD is all about pushing the limits of science in skincare and we knew that we needed to find a more innovative solution to delivering the best possible results from this ingredient. After working through so many concepts, we finally landed on an amphiphilic liquid, in this case, Glycolipids, which allowed us to solubilize the peptide freely. The resulting texture is gel-like and it melts into a comfortable oil-like consistency on application. Your reviews of CAIL have made every step of the process worthwhile and I'm sure that Brandon would be saying "eeek!" in excitement at the results people have been seeing. I know it is deeply disappointing that this product is out of stock during KNOWvember, and so I've worked with the team to ensure that we can offer CAIL at a 23% saving when it does come back into stock next year (we'll be sure to let you know when it returns :-)).

Another of my favourite products is the NIOD Photography Fluid. We wanted to create a formula that could work like a foundation but would leave a natural look when applied to the skin. Being under NIOD, we knew we needed to push the boundaries when it came to colour correction. Additionally, we also wanted the product to remain oil-free and light in texture. Knowing that we didn’t want to use regular iron oxide pigments and titanium dioxide, the search began. We were so excited to discover interference pigments that can manipulate light and correct redness on the skin, whilst also adding a subtle glow and promoting a healthy-looking complexion. To further differentiate this product from a colour correction perspective, we also added a patented dragon fruit complex, which when tested under multiple light settings starts emitting a bluish tone that leads to an immediate brightening effect. One of the great reviews we got for this product was that someone's facial recognition camera didn’t recognize them after applying the product!!

I will also never forget the journey of the Hylamide Pore Control formula. On a Friday back in 2015, I went home thinking the formula was final and left a sample for Brandon to try. The next day (a Saturday) I got a call from Brandon saying that, although the results from the product were incredible, he felt the formula was too shiny on initial application. He was too excited to bring the product to life to wait until Monday and asked if we could possibly work together on it today. In knowing how truly incredible this formula could be, I took the 140km trip back to the office and set up for a weekend of perfecting Pore Control. After a lot of changes (and a lot of pizza), we managed to achieve a light texture that could provide subtle instant mattifying along with the benefits of Niacinamide (same strength as our best-selling Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% from The Ordinary) and multiple other technologies to balance visible shine. We put the product on stability that weekend and in 2016 it was available to purchase.

I have so many stories about my time here at DECIEM and I'm truly humbled by the support you have shown us over the last 7 years. Thank you for trusting us and inspiring us - there would be no DECIEM without all of you. I'm doing an "Ask Me Anything" over on Reddit on 25th November. I hope to see some of you there. PK :-)
