with the earth
DECIEM is not yet a sustainable beauty company, but we have made a commitment to continuously
improve all areas of our operations.
We believe that beauty is between us and the earth, and feel that working to do things better is common sense.
Here are some of the ways that we are simply doing the right thing.
Over the next two years, DECIEM is set to produce approximately 130 million unit boxes to hold all of its well-loved products. Recognizing the impact and scale of this demand, we have transitioned to carbon-neutral cardstock.
Say hello to our
How does it work?
- Our distributor purchases cardstock from an affiliated and certified low-emission paper producer.
- To neutralize any outstanding carbon emissions from the manufacturing process, carbon-offsets are purchased on our behalf by our distributor from CarbonZero.
- Carbon offsets are realized by a variety of funds that support the planting of new trees in areas of need. DECIEM currently works with The Ontario Biodiversity Afforestation Project and The Southern Quebec Afforestation Project.
Online shipment packaging has its challenges, and we are constantly working towards making our methods more sustainable. Our e-commerce packaging currently consists of recycled and recyclable materials.
We are moving away from virgin plastic and embracing biodegradable, recycled, and recyclable
alternatives that are earth-friendly.
While we haven’t found a way to completely avoid the use of these materials, we are actively looking into more sustainable alternatives.
Within the next few months, we will be modifying our in-store plastic bags to welcome more sustainable alternatives and approaches.
As an intermittent solution, we plan to offer smaller plastic bags. In the long term, we will be
transitioning to 100% recyclable paper bags made with recycled content to reduce our footprint
As always, we encourage our customers to reuse our shopping bags when visiting, as this will allow us to reduce production, and therefore, our footprint.
We diligently follow protocol to reduce our operational impact at our warehouses. We use a regulated third-party system to manage any expired raw materials and failed batches, ensuring that they are adequately collected, stored, transported, treated, recovered, and disposed of.
DECIEM is happy to offer an in-store recycling program, giving customers the ability to recycle product empties from any beauty brand. We accept all post-use skincare and cosmetics packaging that typically don’t have a home in most curbside recycling programs.
We accept empty packaging from all beauty brands. Items include:
- Serum bottles
- Dropper lids
- Plastic or aluminium tubes
- Cleanser dispensers and tubes
- Lotion and shower gel bottles
- Shaving foam tubes
- Makeup tubes, cases, sticks, and pencils
- Shampoo and conditioner bottles and caps
- Hair product tubes, jars, and caps
- Hair spray bottles and triggers
Although we try to make the recycling of beauty products as accessible as possible, not everyone will have the chance to visit a DECIEM store. In this case, we encourage customers to contact their local recycling facility to accurately identify what can be recycled.
Our Customer Happiness team is also on hand to help customers identify the composition of product packaging. Please reach out to us through our contact page.
In our offices and stores.
We have undertaken initiatives to minimise our recycling and waste disposal. They include increasing the number of recycling bins in our stores, reinforcing recycling practices carried out by our waste disposal partners, choosing supplies with enhanced reusability, and giving customers the option of receiving a digital receipt.
We also provide our employees with guidelines on how to be greener in the workplace. This includes providing a guide on how common items like cardboard boxes, paper, and plastic should be recycled or disposed of.
All organic waste produced at DECIEM’s Toronto headquarters is currently diverted from North American landfills. With the help of a third-party organization, the material is turned into nutrient-rich compost to support agriculture. In addition, all DECIEM offices around the world follow recycling practices according to their respective jurisdiction. We are following their growth needs to potentially implement similar waste diversion programs in the future. We do our best to encourage sustainable etiquette. This includes keeping heating and air-conditioning at reasonable settings, turning off unused lights in employee areas, and opting for reusable coffee cups, and lunchware. We also encourage paperless practices within our offices where possible.
Lastly, our designated Earth Initiatives team is always on hand to address every employee’s concerns, questions, and suggestions on sustainability related matters across different areas of our operations.
