• Climate change is real, and the next decade matters.

Experts have warned: To limit global warming to 1.5°C, the world needs to cut emissions nearly in half by 2030—and reach net zero by 2050.

But it isn’t just about numbers – it's seeing the world around us change in real time. Scientific evidence is clear: oceans are warming, forests are burning, and wildlife is struggling to keep up. The balance that nature has maintained for thousands of years is shifting, and the effects are impossible to ignore.

It’s also something we feel. The uncertainty, constant headlines, and weight of knowing what’s at stake – it’s heavy on our hearts. Climate anxiety is overwhelming. But awareness can be a powerful counter. The more we understand, the more we can do. Small actions can add up, and progress happens when we keep pushing forward with a goal in sight.

WE AIM TO:

  • Restore ecosystems and build resilience in nature
  • Increase energy efficiency and reduce emissions in our direct operations
  • Expand Our Impact

WHAT WE ARE DOING

Restore Ecosystems andBuild Resilience in Nature

Nature is a powerful force for balance. Healthy ecosystems clean our air, protect biodiversity, and store carbon, but they’re at risk. We’re working with partners who help restore ecosystems and support the communities that depend on them. We’ve made a commitment to act in thoughtful, science-led ways: supporting biodiversity, rebuilding degraded areas, and respecting the needs of local communities. This is more than conservation. It’s about ensuring the long-term health of the places we touch, recognizing that people and nature thrive together.

Our first partner in this endeavor is veritree, a platform that connects businesses to verified restoration projects. Nature-based solutions are actions that protect, restore, or work with nature to address challenges like climate change, water security, and biodiversity loss. They use natural systems, like forests, wetlands, or ocean reefs, to benefit both people and the planet. What we love most is that veritree’s nature-based solutions and verified restoration align directly with our commitment to transparency and our science-led approach. Through our partnership with veritree, we have committed to plant over 500,000 trees and kelp by 2030. To watch our ecosystems thrive, visit our Impact Page.

We believe that time in nature helps reduce stress, boost mental health, and restore a sense of balance. By investing in nature-based solutions and ecosystem restoration, we hope to help create and maintain opportunities to connect with nature. When we take care of nature, we take care of ourselves.

  • Increase Energy Efficiency and Reduce Emissions in Our Direct Operations

From charging your phone to fueling your car, energy use is part of daily life—but how we source it matters. Fossil fuels remain the most common and emissive energy source, driving emissions and contributing to climate change. As global energy demand grows, we must make smarter choices, from the power we use to the products we consume. A more sustainable future starts with rethinking how we fuel it.

That’s why we’re improving efficiency and shifting to lower-carbon energy across our operations, reducing emissions where we can and making the changes within our control, one step at a time.

  • Energy Efficiency

We aim to optimize energy use throughout our main manufacturing facilities in the following ways:

    • We conduct regular energy audits across our stores, offices, distribution centers, and our main manufacturing facility to understand where we can most effectively reduce emissions. Manufacturing remains our priority because it’s the largest source of emissions across our global operations. Our goal is for our main manufacturing facility to set a standard the rest can follow.
    • We are optimizing and monitoring our equipment schedules and performance while also recovering waste heat in our HVAC and building enclosures.
    • We are in the process of installing EV chargers to help electrify our fleet and for use by our employees. Electrifying our equipment is one of the biggest ways we can cut emissions.
    • We have installed LED lighting in the vast majority of our facilities and offices.
    • We mix the majority of our products in batches at room temperature, minimizing the need for heat and preventing further greenhouse gas emissions.
  • RENEWABLE ENERGY

Our laboratories and businesses require significant electricity, so we've prioritized sourcing renewable energy to meet these needs.

We source 100% renewable electricity through several approaches. In the US and Canada, this is made possible by a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) for 22 MW of wind power from the Ponderosa wind farm in Oklahoma via The Estée Lauder Companies.  In fiscal 2025, the VPPA generated more than 100,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of renewable electricity. For our operations in other regions, our renewable electricity sourcing is through utility contracts and energy attribute certificates (EACs). That’s roughly enough electricity to power more than 9,000 average US homes for a year*, or charge over 54 million smartphones every day for 12 months**. For our operations in other regions, our renewable electricity sourcing is through utility contracts and energy attribute certificates (EACs).

  • Expanding Our Impact

We have the power to influence sustainability beyond our actions at DECIEM. Through our partners at Estee Lauder, we provide education and resources to our vendors and suppliers, helping them reduce their emissions. These efforts include opportunities for purchase agreements of renewable energy, lowering the impact of their energy use.

  • We offset the carbon emissions from shipping for every order across all markets for The Ordinary, NIOD, and LoOPHA websites through verified carbon offset programs. We're actively working to reduce emissions across all operations, with offsets serving as an interim measure for emissions we cannot yet eliminate. We purchase offsets from high-quality projects focused on reforestation and conservation that demonstrate measurable carbon impact.

As part of these ongoing efforts, DECIEM has provided funding to the BigCoast Forest Climate Initiative to offset 8,000 Verified Carbon Units (tonnes of CO₂e) for our deliveries from fulfillment centers to our consumer’s home delivery addresses (excludes Amazon and other retailers) for the period of July 2022 to June 2025. The BigCoast Forest Climate Initiative protects forests associated with carbon sequestration and biodiversity conservation in coastal British Columbia to reduce and remove emissions from timber harvesting. The BigCoast Forest Climate Initiative (VCS 3018) adheres to the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and is sold by Mosaic Forest Management through ClimeCo. These credits were not verified by a third party.

  • DECIEM is also providing funding to the Katingan Restoration and Conservation Project and the Yichang Sunjiawan MSW LFG Project to offset 6,000 Verified Carbon Units (tonnes of CO₂e) for our deliveries from fulfillment centers to our consumer’s home delivery addresses (excludes Amazon and other retailers) for the period of July 2025 to June 2027. Rated AA by BeZero, the Katingan Restoration Project and Conservation Project (VCS 1477) protects and restores 149,800 hectares of threatened peatland ecosystems with rich biodiversity and offers local people sustainable sources of income. These credits were sold by STX Group and, third-party verified by Aster Global Environmental Solutions, Inc. Also, rated AA by BeZero, the Yichang Sunjiawan MSW LFG Project (VCS 2354) collects and utilizes landfill gas from the Sunjiawan landfill site to generate electricity which would otherwise be released into the atmosphere. These credits were sold by STX Group and, third-party verified by Shenzhen CTI International Certification Co., Ltd.

  • Conscious Shopping, Evolving Thoughtfully

For years, we ran Slowvember, a campaign that encouraged pausing before purchasing and choosing only what truly serves us, including closing on Black Friday. That spirit hasn’t gone anywhere; it has simply evolved. Today, our focus is on conscious shopping: making mindful choices, reducing unnecessary consumption, and ensuring the things we bring into our lives have purpose, not just packaging. We still believe the most sustainable choice is often the one we decide not to make.
